How Payment Processing Fees Work
Payment processors may charge a percentage of each transaction plus a fixed fee. These charges reduce the amount a merchant receives from a payment.
Payment Processing Fee Formula
Percentage Fee = Transaction Amount × Processing Fee Rate
Total Processing Fee = Percentage Fee + Fixed Fee
Net Amount Received = Transaction Amount − Total Processing Fee
Effective Fee Rate = (Total Processing Fee ÷ Transaction Amount) × 100
Calculation Example
Suppose a customer pays $100, the processor charges 2.9% plus a fixed fee of $0.30.
- Percentage fee: $100 × 2.9% = $2.90
- Fixed fee: $0.30
- Total processing fee: $3.20
- Net amount received: $96.80
- Effective fee rate: 3.20%
