How to Calculate Return on Ad Spend (ROAS)

Return on Ad Spend (ROAS) measures how much revenue is generated for every unit of currency spent on advertising. It is commonly used to evaluate the revenue performance of advertising campaigns.

ROAS Formula

ROAS = Revenue Attributed to Ads ÷ Advertising Spend

Revenue Minus Ad Spend = Revenue Attributed to Ads − Advertising Spend

Calculation Example

Suppose your business spends $1,000 on an advertising campaign and generates $4,000 in attributed revenue.

  • Advertising spend: $1,000.
  • Revenue from ads: $4,000.
  • ROAS: $4,000 ÷ $1,000 = 4.00x.
  • Revenue per $1 spent: $4.00.
  • Revenue minus ad spend: $4,000 − $1,000 = $3,000.

This means the campaign generated $4 in attributed revenue for every $1 spent on advertising. The remaining $3,000 is not necessarily profit because other business costs have not been deducted.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Return on Ad Spend (ROAS)?

ROAS is a marketing metric that compares revenue attributed to advertising with the amount spent on those ads. It helps businesses evaluate advertising revenue performance.

What is a good ROAS?

A good ROAS depends on product margins, operating costs, industry, advertising goals, and business model. A higher ROAS does not automatically mean a campaign is profitable.

What does a 4.00x ROAS mean?

A 4.00x ROAS means that the advertising campaign generated $4 in attributed revenue for every $1 spent on advertising.

Is ROAS the same as ROI?

No. ROAS measures attributed advertising revenue relative to advertising spend. ROI measures the gain or loss from an investment relative to its cost. ROI calculations generally consider profit or net returns rather than revenue alone.

Does a positive ROAS mean my campaign is profitable?

Not necessarily. ROAS does not automatically account for product costs, packaging, shipping, marketplace fees, payment processing fees, taxes, or other operating expenses. A campaign can have a ROAS above 1.00x and still lose money.

What if my ROAS is below 1.00x?

A ROAS below 1.00x means the attributed advertising revenue is lower than the advertising spend. For example, a 0.50x ROAS means the campaign generated $0.50 in attributed revenue for every $1 spent.

Does this calculator include other business costs?

No. This calculator compares attributed advertising revenue with advertising spend only. It does not calculate net profit or include other business expenses.
